About West Greece

One of Greece’s 13 administrative regions, Western Greece comprises part of continental Greece and the northwestern corner of the Peloponnese peninsula. It encompasses rugged mountain peaks and the vibrant port city of Patras, as well as spectacularly positioned monasteries that have existed for centuries.

Things to do in West Greece

Whether you want to immerse yourself in Greece’s ancient history or hike to the summit of monumental massifs, Western Greece offers adventures off the beaten track.

Sightsee in Patras. Serving as the capital of Western Greece, Patras is a bustling city and ferry port overlooking the Ionian Sea. Explore the ruined towers and walls of the 6th-century Patras Castle, which was built on the ruins of an ancient acropolis, before admiring the Mycenaean and Hellenistic artefacts exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Patras. Concerts and cultural events are presented in the 1st-century Roman Odeon.

Climb to the summit of Mount Erymanthos. Dominated by the 2,224-metre-high peak of Olenos, Mount Erymanthos is an immense massif that has been designated as a Special Area of Conservation. The ascent to its summit takes in lush pastures and pine forests, as well as rustic huts used by local shepherds in the summer months. From the top, there are magnificent views across the nearby mountains of the north Peloponnese.

Visit the monastery of Mega Spilaio. Built into a sheer cliff near Kalavryta, Mega Spilaio is a Greek Orthodox monastery believed to have been founded in 362. It was destroyed during World War II before being rebuilt as the eight-storey complex seen today. A highlight is the 17th-century church, which houses beautiful frescoes, mosaic floors and a decorated bronze door. Antique manuscripts and wooden crosses are exhibited at the monastery museum.

Getting around West Greece

Patras Araxos Airport is the main aviation gateway to Western Greece and has seasonal flights to destinations across Europe. Trains connect to major towns and cities throughout the region while buses are also available for getting around. Ferries connect from Patras to the Ionian islands and the Italian mainland. Renting a car is the most convenient way of getting around.
