About Sundre

Nestled in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, Sundre is a riverside town in central Alberta. It is named after the original home of Nels T. Hagen, a Norwegian migrant who became Sundre’s first postmaster. Today, the town is an important hub for the surrounding forestry, agriculture and ranching industries.

Things to do in Sundre

Comprising three different galleries is the Sundre & District Museum, which showcases the human and natural history of the region. More than 170 taxidermied animals from six continents are showcased in the Chester Mjolsness World of Wildlife Exhibit, while the people and events that have shaped Sundre are highlighted in the Niels Eskesen Reception Gallery. Historic buildings from the area cluster in the Pioneer Village.

On the eastern outskirts of town is the Sundre Golf Club, which features an 18-hole course set within a picturesque rural setting. Overlooking the 18th green is an idyllic patio where you can relax with a drink or meal after your round. Also near Sundre is the Coyote Creek Golf Course, which features a driving range and well-stocked pro shop.

Want to stretch your legs? Follow one of the hiking trails that wind through the Snake Hill Nature Recreation Area, which is also accessible to bikers, snowshoers and cross-country skiers. Walking trails also hug the banks of the Red Deer River and connect to Royal Purple Park. On the other side of the Red Deer River are the floodplains and channels of the Sundre North Natural Area.

Getting around Sundre

Sundre is around 1.5 hours’ drive from Calgary and Calgary International Airport, which has flights to destinations across the globe. Buses connect to Sundre and the town centre is small enough to explore on foot. Renting a car is the most convenient way of getting around the area.
