About Ploce

Overlooking the Adriatic Sea, Ploče is an affluent seaside town in Dalmatia, located partway between Dubrovnik and Split. It lies at the mouth of the Neretva River and has been an important port since the 14th century.

Things to do in Ploce

Adjacent to Ploče are the Bacina Lakes, a series of seven turquoise lakes that provide an idyllic setting for swimming, fishing and water sports. Local legend tells of the Illyrian queen Teuta spending many days here, which is why the lakes have been affectionately nicknamed “Queen Teuta’s Pearls”. You can cycle along the trail that rings the lakes or explore the shores by kayak.

Ploče serves as a gateway to the Bosnia and Hercegovina city of Mostar, which lies just over an hour’s drive inland. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is famed for its Stari Most, a photogenic bridge where locals can be seen diving spectacularly into the river below. Don’t miss the 17th-century Tabacica Mosque with its 20-metre-high minaret.

On the edge of Ploče is the Neretva River Delta, which has been designated by Ramsar as a Wetland of International Importance. It encompasses lagoons, sand flats and marshes that provide important habitat for birdlife, as well as the largest remaining reed bed in Croatia. Birdwatchers may be lucky enough to spot spoonbills, stilts and Kentish plovers.

Getting around Ploce

Ploče is around 1.5 hours’ drive from both Dubrovnik and Split, with both cities home to airports offering flights to destinations across Europe. Regular trains connect to the Ploče railway station and the town centre is compact enough to explore on foot. Renting a car is the most convenient way of accessing the surrounding attractions.
