About Amposta

Set on the banks of the Ebro River, Amposta lies at the southern end of the Costa Daurada in Catalonia. It is traversed by the GR92 long-distance footpath that connects from Portbou to Tarifa and lies on the doorstep of the Serra del Montsia and the Ebro Delta nature reserves.

Things to do in Amposta

Stroll through Amposta to admire its historic buildings, such as the Castell d’Amposta and the 14th-century tower of La Carrova. Don’t miss the Modernist-style Casa Fabregues or the 1919-built suspension bridge spanning the Ebro River. Changing contemporary art exhibitions are showcased at the Centre d'Art Terres de l’Ebre.

Sprawling east of Amposta is the Ebro Delta Nature Reserve, which encompasses 320 square kilometres of sandy beaches, rice fields and reed beds. It has been designated as a European Destination of Excellence due to its sustainable tourism initiatives and provides an important habitat for more than 400 recorded bird species. Follow the boardwalk that leads to the Bassa de les Olles and see the shifting dunes of Punta del Fangar or watch flamingos wading in L’Encanyissada.

South of Amposta is the Serra del Montsia, a rugged mountain range covered with maquis shrubland, olive and almond trees. Hiking trails wind their way up the slopes of La Torreta, from where you can enjoy magnificent views across the Ebro Delta and the Mediterranean Sea. Dotting the region are the remains of old Iberian villages and the German-built settlement of La Selleta.
